# Sikhism Guru Granth Sahib ## Overview The GGS serves as the eternal living Guru of the Sikh faith. Compiled by GUR Arjan Dev, it is unique among world scriptures as it contains the writings of Sikh GURs, Hindu Bhagats, and Muslim Sufi saints, emphasizing the universality of divine truth. ## Core Philosophy - **IK (One Universal Creator):** The central tenet is monotheism, transcending caste, creed, and gender. - **Shabad Guru:** Divine wisdom is accessed through the SHB (word/hymn), which acts as the bridge between the human soul and the Divine. ## Structure and Composition - **RAG (Musical Framework):** The text is organized into 31 RAGs, dictating the mood and melody for recitation. - **BG (Divine Utterance):** The GGS consists of 1430 angs (limbs/pages). It begins with the Mool Mantar, the foundational creed. ## Historical Significance - **Compilation:** Completed in 1604 AD. Later, GUR Gobind Singh added the compositions of GUR Tegh Bahadur, finalizing the text in 1708 AD. - **Eternal Guruship:** Upon his passing, GUR Gobind Singh declared the GGS as the final, living Guru for all Sikhs. ## Key Concepts - **Seva (Selfless Service):** Integral to living the teachings of the GGS. - **Simran (Meditation):** Constant remembrance of the Divine through the recitation of Gurbani. - **Equality:** Explicit rejection of the caste system and the elevation of women’s status. ## Conclusion The GGS is not merely a book but a spiritual guide, representing the collective wisdom of enlightened souls committed to truth, justice, and humanity.
